Your Task

Yeah, I know. I failed. I didn't find an answer. But the question is...can you? Research is one way to prove something. Experience is another. Your task is to compare a few of Mozart's pieces with a few contemporary pieces of today and use YOUR ear to make some relationships. You don't have to be a musical genius, just be able to a few comparisons.

Process

Step 1)

Search for a piece by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Some good ones are his Marriage of Figaro (Nozze di Figaro) Overture and his Magic Flute (Die Zauberflote) Overture, as they provide a range of his style. Take notes on anything that you notice. Dynamics (volume), tempo (speed), etc. Or you can listen to it here.

Step 2)
Search for a piece by Valentin Silvestrov. You can use dogpile audio. Again, take notes on the different things you notice. Samples can be found here.

Step 3)
Make a venn diagram. What did they have in common? What was different?

Conclusion

It's true that I didn't find very many cold, hard, facts in my research of Mozart's influence on modern music. I found many sources that said he did have an influence, but none of them could tell me what exactly it was.
This made me wonder: Is it true that Mozart is more of a presence than an actual influence? Was it just his skill and the young age at which he started composing that made him so famous? After asking many family members, etc, it proved that though many of them didn't know what he had composed or much about him, but they did know his name and how old he was when he first started.
After learning from Cody Westheimer that Bach seemed to have a larger impact on today's composer I was disappointed. After all...Mozart was Mozart. But what did that mean?
I think that that simply meant, and means, that he was skilled...and his father did a very good job promoting him.
From my I-Search I haven't learned about Mozart's influence. What I have learned, though, is that its important to look into something before proclaiming it miraculous.
